President James A. Garfield (11/19/1831 - 9/19/1881) was shot on this site on July 2, 1881, when the Baltimore & Potomac Railroad Station was here. There is no real historic plaque marking the site. I learned this on an episode of Ten Things You Did Not Know About History, broadcast on the History Channel on August 16, 2014, hosted by Henry Rollins (who was Black Flag's lead singer). The gist of the Garfield segment was that Garfield did not die from an assassin's bullet, but by subsequent medical malpractice.
