I saw this in a review by David Hajdu in the New York Times Book Review, 12/2/12, at p. 64, of Cyndi Lauper's autobiography. It read, in part, Never academically inclined, Lauper struggled horribly in class and was eventually expelled form Richmond Hill High School in Queens. (After she became a celebrity, the school gave her an honorary diploma.) Wikipedia identifies some famous graduates, including Rodney Dangerfield and Anthony Cardinal Bevilacqua. It appears that the school was closed because of poor performance but may reopen next year.
