About

Angry Mobs Formed When 1st Black Family Moved In, 1957

The Myers family was the first African American family to move into Levittown, PA, in 1957, causing a standoff between some angry neighbors who objected on racial grounds and good neighbors, civil rights groups and the state government. There is a reprint of the 8/16/57 Philadelphia Inquirer account in the 8/3/09 Inquirer at B1. There is a book on the subject, Levittown, Two Families, One Tycoon, and the Fight for Civil Rights in America's Legendary Suburb, by David Kushner, published by Walker and Co. in 2009.

Comments : This home was featured in film clips from 1957 on Stories from the Road on the History channel last night. The accounts were both frightening and sad.
