About

Prohibition Era Speakeasy Near Rittenhouse Square

The Stotesbury Mansion has for many years now been the home of the Catholic Philopatrian Literary Institute ( Philo Club ), which rents out the premises for events. It has quite a history, including visits by several presidents, and a fireplace belonging to Dolly Madison from the White House. The thing that I found most interesting is that the bar for the ballroom was a speakeasy during the Prohibition era. You enter the ballroom through a mirrored hallway, and if you look carefully you will see that one of the mirrored panels on the left wall is really a secret door into the bar.
