Cornwells Fire Company Number One

About

Cornwells Fire Company Number One

This, the second and present home of the company, was built between 1955 and 1958. (The original firehouse was at 1018 Cornwells Avenue, a block away.) There is a good history on its Web site. The white half circle above the bay doors and the white rectangles above the doors were originally windows, which looked a lot better, but leaked all the time. But it is still a nice looking, well preserved building, and the company has had tremendous volunteers and its share of heroes.

Comments : I think the semicircular window is called a fanlight.

Comments : I recall that in the sixties, the office to the left of the bay doors when facing the fire house was Vitos Barber Shop, and then Genes Barber Shop. I recall when the office on the right side was the law office of Alfred Francis Shea, and then the Bensalem Historical Society, and I heard that prior to that there had been a jeweler there that moved up to the row of stores by Clovernook Ave., and a baked goods store that was open only on weekends, and had a big after-church business on Sunday mornings. [12/30/16- There is a business card for Prices Bakery, adjacent to this fire house, in Bensalem II by the Historical Society of Bensalem Township, at p. 184. It says the phone # was Cornwells 1134. Three Bakings Daily. Open Sundays, 7 to 11 and 4 to 10.]

Comments : My young son was asking me about fire alarm call boxes, which caused me to remember something. There used to be one on the front of this building. I forget the exact type it was. Someone wishing to report a fire would activate it, the roof siren would go off, and when firefighters reported, the person would explain the fire emergency to them.
