Bessie Smith appeared at Wander Inn here.

There is a new Wander Inn at 2500 S. 3rd St. in Philly, but the original was here. It was a bit of a dive bar, yet blues legend Bessie Smith was a regular performer. There is not much about it on the Web. It was robbed by the infamous "bicycle bandit," according to the Phila. Daily News, p. 6, 8/31/96. A burglar got stuck in its dumb-waiter, according to the Camden County Post, p.2, 5/28/99. Ms. Smith's obituary states that her last performance was here, see the Phila. Daily News, p. 25, 10/28/91. There are some later references to it in the Phila. Inquirer; search at newspapers.com.
