Mob Leveled a Gay Cruising Spot Here

A mob of homophobic vigilantes, on June 21, 1969, cut down the trees in the Flushing Meadows Corona Park, near the site dedicated to Ilse Metzger (escaped from the Nazis in WWII), because gay men would cruise at night there. The police knew of this happening and did nothing to stop it. Members of the vigilante group lived at the nearby Forest Hills South apartment complex, but no one with a memory of the event was found there by a New York Times reporter. See the New York Times, July 7, 2019, at Metro pp. 1, 4.
