Crispus Attucks Hotel

The Crispus Attacks Hotel once stood here. It was favored by African American performers in the age of jazz, including Billie Holiday, Louis Armstrong and Jelly Roll Morton. Morton stayed here while he was recording at the RCA plant in Camden. Holiday's room was raided for drugs on May 16, 1947, while she was playing either the Earle or Royal theater on South Street (online accounts vary). Roy Campanella and most Negro League baseball teams also stayed here. Music mogul Kenneth Gamble and his wife Faatimah built the playground here that is part of a charter school.
