In the 60s and 70s when the old bridge was here, there was a Gatling gun on the concrete railing on the NW side of the bridge. When I was a kid we always looked for it whenever the family sedan would drive across this bridge. What it commemorated, I don't know. It is now in a small setting called Heritage Park on the NE side of the present day bridge. Remnants of the old bridge seem to be in Heritage Park. See http://bridgereports.com/1458917. Actually, the wall goes back several bridges, see http://www.hulmevillehistorical.org/archives.php. Unfortunately, even today, there are no plaques to explain the significance of the Gatling gun at this site.
