The beach at this lovely state park was used during World War II to test the first supersonic missiles.
Parts of Stealing Home (governor's home was beach house) and Creepshow were filmed at this park. It is pretty well documented on the Web.

Comments : I picked up the 2012 Island Beach State Park Visitor Guide. On p. 19, there is an entry by Ferd Klebold titled The Bumblebee Project. The following info is from it. It says that in 1944 the US Navy did top secret research here, supervised by Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory, and Bumblebee was the code name. On 6/3/45, the first supersonic ramjet missile was launched, at about 1300 mph. The site was between the two ocean bathing beaches, and an 80x40 foot concrete pad is still under the sand dunes. A model of the ramjet is at the Smithsonian Institute. Shortly after the war the operation was moved to the White Sands Proving Grounds in New Mexico.
