The Croton Distributing Reservoir was here in the 19th century. It stored 20 million gallons of water, had 50-foot-tall walls and was essentially a four-acre lake. This information is from the New York Times, 9/15/13, at Metro. p. 2, where it says Evidence of the old reservoir's stone-work can still be seen beside the stairs in the South Court of the library.
