Don McClean has told several newspapers, and NPR's Neal Conan, that he first performed his classic song Bye Bye Miss American Pie at the Temple University Fieldhouse in Philadelphia. One would think that he would know. But I think that journalist Clark DeLeon makes a very good case that Mr. McClean's memory may be a bit faulty, and that the performance was really on March 12, 1971 at this location, which was at the time called the St. Joseph's College Fieldhouse. Mr. McClean was the opening act for Laura Nyro. See http://articles.philly.com/2012-08-13/news/33168161_1_don-mclean-miss-american-pie-laura-nyro.
