Our Lady of Loreto was a Catholic parish and is now a different denomination. Our Lady of Loreto is the patron saint of flight and the streamlined moderne building was designed to celebrate the miracle of flight. The winged crest carved in sandstone above the door is nearly identical to the pins Pan Am flight crews used to wear. This information is taken from Inga Saffron's column in the Philadelphia Inquirer, 10/16/16, at p. H18, where it also reads, [Architect Frank L.] Petrillo's square, somewhat stubby, belfry is strongly reminiscent of the air traffic control towers then [1938] going up in other cities.
