Dr. Robert D. Spencer, known as the "Angel of Ashland," performed between 40,000 and 100,000 abortions here in a pre-Roe v. Wade age. He allegedly built quarters here for Black patients who could not stay anywhere in town. Only a vacant lot is here now.
