Downbeat Jazz Club was here.

The legendary Downbeat jazz club was here, above what was the Willow Bar. Jazz greats such as Dizzy Gillespie performed here. Benny Golson and John Coltraine stood outside together and listened because they were too young to go inside. This information is from the fabulous Web page, http://hiddencityphila.org/2014/04/remembering-the-downbeat-1940s-progressive-philly-jazz-club/. The space also once occupied a great record store, Sounds of Market.
