Montgomeryville Mart, 1954 to 1990

This was a 100-stand, 3.4 acre merchandise market, similar to the Q-Mart in Quakertown, PA. It closed for other development in 1990 and burned down in 1991. I worked with a Philadelphia rock band in the mid-80s (the Plural Nouns) that got a gig at a tavern within this mart that wanted to try some live music as part of its entertainment draw, and when we got there it turned out to be a go-go bar. The predominantly male clientele quickly realized that when our band was playing the girls were not dancing, complained to management, and that was the end of that. I don't remember the name of the bar. I did meet someone who as a teenager collected hubcaps that accumulated near a bump on Route 309 in Colmar and sold them at an outdoor stand at the mart on weekends, and made some decent money doing it.

Comments : The obituary of Charles H. Taylor appeared in the 3/12/12 Philadelphia Inquirer. It said that he and his wife had a deli for more than two decades in this mart called [Taylors] Country Store. He also had a lunch place by the same name in Philly, first at 18th and Sansom Sts., then 1609 Sansom St.

Comments : I just saw something on the Web about this mart that had the name of the go-go bar that was here, Mickeys Mouse. I just remember it as Mickeys, but it could have been Mickeys Mouse. .... Ah, there is something else on the Web about Disney making it drop the Mouse in its name.
