AMC 309 Cinema Sign, Montgomeryville, PA

The AMC 309 Cinema neon sign is an example of moderne splendor! This gem of 1960s roadside vernacular commercial architecture welcomes travelers from Philadelphia going North on Route 309 to Montgomery County. Its shapes nicely match those painted on the wall of the 309 Cinema building. This was also the site of the 309 Drive-In until 1984. This writer does not know whether the existing sign was in use for the Drive-In. It did once have a signboard under what is there now that listed the movies that were showing.

Comments : The local post office is North Wales, but most would know this area as Montgomeryville (Montgomery Township), as it is a few miles from the town called North Wales.

Comments : Did the sign or neon change colors over the years? Seems to me it has.

Comments : //www.thereporteronline.com/business/20170605/amc-309-in-montgomery-township-to-reopen-this-fall-after-major-renovations. I hope they keep the wonderful neon sign and wall lettering.

Comments : This sign is no longer there. I hope that it was taken away for refurbishing as part of the redesign of the complex, or maybe it will at least be incorporated somewhere within it. It seems like it takes a lot of weather abuse, so maybe it can be incorporated into the building somehow. Lets hope!

Comments : Yesterday I learned that the sign was back, so I took a look. It is beautiful! I am not sure what, if anything, is original. It follows the same motif, but looks like LED neon, though I really dont know enough about that to be sure. The AMC part looks original, although I am not sure. I dont blame the company for modernizing it, as the old tubes seemed flimsy and were always getting damaged in storms. There was something classic about the old look, but the new look, I think, does go better with the renovated buildings new look. Kudos to the company, it could have easily ignored the signs legacy but instead paid homage to it. Maybe well learn more about what was done regarding this sign as publicity for the reopening unfolds.

Comments : Last night I was driving up Welsh Road Road and when I looked north onto Rt. 309, I saw that the 0 was out in the 309 part of the sign. I hope that this is not a bad omen as I would really like to see this replacement sign be a success.

Comments : I mentioned in the original entry how nicely the lettering on the wall facing 309/63 looked, matching the original sign. There is now new lettering on the building addition, and it looks great. It reminds me of the typeface in the interior of the iconic PSFS building in Philly.
