A Peek at 19th Century Working Class Living in Philadelphia

There are four trinity style homes dating from 1815 on this alley leading from St. Peter's Way, which was until 1965 South Orianna Street. Where they sit was once the garden of William Bingham, who at his death in 1804 was considered the wealthiest person in America and who had a mansion at Third and Spruce Streets (razed in 1850). There was another set of trinities across from these homes that was demolished in the mid-1950s. This set was updated by preservationist architect Robert T. Trump in 1961. They are small, but they give us an idea of working class living in the 19th century. This information is from an article in the Philadelphia Inquirer, July 28, 2013, starting on p. D1. The article describes life for the current inhabitants, living in relatively small quarters, but spaces with lots of charm. (The article has an apostrophe in Bell's, but maps online do not.)
