The worst airship accident ever occurred four years before the Hindenbug, but is little known. It happened on April 4, 1933, when the Akron derigible, belonging to the US Navy, crashed off of Barnegat Light. 73 men were killed, and two more were killed when a rescue blimp crashed the next day. There is a small plaque honoring the tragedy in this park. There will be an 80th anniversary memorial tribute tomorrow at the plaque location.
