Trough under the bar, U.S. Hotel Bar & Grill, Manayunk

This tavern used to be a companion to the United States Hotel, which was next door but replaced by the theater that is now used as the Loring aluminum warehouse. The trough under the bar with the spigot at the end was supposedly used by men back when women were not allowed in bars as a urinal, so they would not have to get up and could keep on drinking. Some say this is myth, that these troughs in old bars in Philly, Pittsburgh and Baltimore were really spitoons or places to clean one's boots, but I'm inclinded to believe the nastier story.
